L2L3 Services over SRv6
Layer 3 and Layer 2 services fundamentally ensure efficient, secure, and flexible connectivity between network sites. These services provide data transmission across a shared infrastructure while ensuring that critical applications function reliably. Capabilities of L3 services cater to IP-based connectivity, while L2 services enable the extension of Ethernet connectivity over diverse geographical areas.
Testing for the interoperability of L3/L2 services over SRv6 guarantees that implementations comply with the protocols set across multiple vendors. Successful implementation will ease operational challenges and demonstrate that SRv6 is indeed ready for modern applications, including its role in transport networks within 5G/6G.
Our topology involved two IS-IS levels interconnected with multiple Area Border Routers (ABRs). Each node was configured with BGP sessions to a route reflector and set with IS-IS adjacencies to the neighbor routers. The ABRs worked on both IS-IS levels, which allowed them to leak routes from level 2 to level 1, facilitating end-to-end connectivity throughout the network.

Some vendors implemented the Transposition Scheme from RFC 9252 to minimize service route encoding. The transposition scheme influences the FUNCTION field to migrate into the label space of the route's NLRI, allowing multiple service routes with the same base segments to be packed together in one BGP update message. All participating vendors were able to decode SRv6 service SIDs from received routes, regardless of whether transposition was employed, so long as encoding by length was done correctly.
Support for End.DT4 with NEXT-CSID + End.DT6 with NEXT-CSID and End.DT46 with NEXT-CSID service types was also validated across the participants.
The following participants applied and resolved the transposition scheme:
Arrcus S9610-36D, Ciena 5134, Ciena 8140 Coherent Metro Router, Ericsson Router6671, Juniper ACX7509, Juniper MX204, Juniper MX304, Juniper PTX10002-36QDD, PEKeysight IxNetwork, Nokia 7250 IXR-e2, Nokia 7750 SR-1.
The following participants were able to resolve the transposition successfully:
Arista 7280R3, H3C CR16000-M1A, H3C CR16003E-F, Huawei ATN 910D-A, Huawei NetEngine A821,
