Service providers may run multiple IS-IS instances over the same physical infrastructure to separate services or transport planes, for example when connecting metro or access domains to a core network while maintaining protection across the core. We verified Multi-Instance IS-IS using Instance Identifier TLV (type 7) in an SR-MPLS domain and confirmed that TI-LFA protection operated independently per instance. We ran the test with two IS-IS instances on the same physical Ethernet link and over the same Layer-3 adjacency between HPE and Nokia devices, and confirmed that when a link that is being used by one instance fails, traffic for that instance would be rerouted through the alternate path via the remaining router in the topology and continued to traverse the DUTs as expected. Traffic was generated between the traffic generator and the opposite PE across the SR domain to observe the forwarding path of each instance. We verified that only the affected IS-IS instance recalculated the path and switched traffic, while the second instance continued forwarding over its original path. In the first round, we disabled the link between Arista and HPE. Traffic that previously traversed Arista switched to the alternate path via Nokia and taking the shared interface (backing up both instances) between HPE and Nokia. In the second round, we disabled the link between ZTE and Nokia and observed traffic rerouting through HPE as the alternate path. We then swapped the instance placement and repeated the failures. |
