In real-world networks, multicast sources and receivers might be distributed across different EVPN tenant domains, while further multicast nodes exist in an external PIM domain. In such an OISM PE interworking with an external PIM domain scenario, the gateway is named PIM/EVPN Gateway (PEG). RFC 9625 defined all the details that we need to follow to make such an interworking scenario work. |

In our test, we simulated an EVPN VXLAN domain connected to an external PIM domain, with two OISM-capable PEs functioning as PEGs between the EVPN VXLAN domain and the external PIM domain. PIM Sparse Mode (PIM-SM) was configured on both the external domain and the PEG interfaces. We initiated IGMPv3 (S, G) join messages from both ends and observed that EVPN-RT-6 (SMET) was sent on the PEG. And both PEGs' SMETs were identical, confirming EVPN RT-7 (multicast membership report synch) worked as expected. We also verified the modulo-based DR election and observed that the DR election status was identical on both PEGs. In the end, we generated bidirectional multicast traffic with Keysight IxNetwork and observed no packet loss or duplication, confirming the successful operation of Ingress Replication (IR). Meanwhile, we observed flooding on the RR due to the presence of non-OISM-capable DUTs, which triggered a fallback to EVPN RT-3 (IMET) for backward compatibility. Consequently, BUM traffic flooding to these devices was expected behavior. |
